Lesson 1

Blends, digraphs, and the Floss Rule

Kid version: A blend has letters that sit together, but you can still hear each sound. A digraph has two letters that make one sound. The Floss Rule often doubles f, l, s, or z after a short vowel.

Lesson 2

3-letter blends and final blends

Kid version: A 3-letter blend has three consonants at the start, and you can hear all three. A final blend has two consonants at the end, and you can hear both.

Lesson 5

Inflected endings: -s, -es, -ed, -ing

Kid version: An inflected ending is added to the end of a word and changes its meaning. -s and -es can show more than one or change an action word. -ed often tells about something that already happened. -ing often tells about an action happening now.

Offline CMUdict Pronunciation lookup works without a dictionary API key. Flashback cards use a simplified kid-friendly “say it like” clue, and Hear Word provides the full spoken pronunciation.
